Thank you for your interest in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Advocate Christ Medical Center! ACMC is a 788 bed Level 1 Trauma Center located in Oak Lawn, IL, on the southwest border of Chicago. The Emergency Department is known nationwide as one of the highest volume and highest acuity centers in the country, with over 110,000 patient visits annually and more than 3300 level one trauma activations each year. We are a designated stroke center of excellence, a transplant center, and one of busiest LVAD centers in the country. In 2025, US News and World Report ranked ACMC nationally in Cardiology, Pulmonology, OBGyn, Endocrinology, Geriatrics and GI. We were also designated the Best Regional Hospital for Community Access. ACMC has a longstanding reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
Our Emergency Department has undergone significant renovations and improvements recently. In 2017 we opened a brand new 24 bed Pediatric Emergency Department. In 2022, we moved into our State-of-the-Art Adult Emergency Department, where we gained 4 new charting/teaching rooms, 65 patient rooms and 10 new resuscitation bays (tripling our resuscitation space).
We are proud of the longstanding culture, reputation, and unique 1 to 1 teaching model at our Emergency Medicine residency program. We have cultivated a collegial family-like environment in a world-class city that draws talented educators, residents, and medical students. From day 1, our interns are treated the same as the most senior member of the program and work 1 to 1 with their attending to take care of high acuity patients and master critical procedures.
Our residency cultivates the growing interest in global health among emergency medicine residents. Our goal is to provide opportunities to participate in various Global Health efforts. We actively seek to partner with established organizations that provide longitudinal medical care and health education. Through these experiences our residents gain a better understanding of international healthcare systems, cultural diversity, humanitarian response, and collaboration with emergency medicine colleagues all over the world. We provide financial support, and residents may use elective time during second and third year for Global Health projects.
At ACMC, we recognize that optimal clinical performance and professional satisfaction require work/life balance and resident well-being. In 2017, Vice Chair of Education Elise Lovell partnered with EM educators nationally to create a wellness curriculum that was introduced to 5 EM residency programs. We have a yearly lakeside Residency Retreat in Wisconsin, with sessions focused on program advancement, self reflection, and team building. We continue to welcome new ideas to promote a healthy, happy residency training experience.
