Pediatric patients make up about 33% of our ED visits, and our 16 bed unit is open 24/7. The ED is staffed by 4 Peds/EM trained physicians as well as the remainder of our EM attendings. It is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center, and our senior residents respond to all traumatic and medical pediatric resuscitations.
Shifts in the pediatric ED are integrated into the EM rotations throughout the course of residency, rather than as an isolated month of peds EM. We feel this gives our residents a strong logitudinal pediatric EM experience and allows them to experience the seasonal variation of pediatric illnesses. Additionally, 2nd and 3rd year residents are given the opportunity to moonlight in the pediatric ED on overnight shifts (with attending supervision).
Additionally, PGY-1 residents rotate on the pediatric floor for 4 weeks, in the NICU for 1 week, and with dedicated peds ED shifts for 1 week. PGY-2 residents rotate through the PICU for 3 weeks. Our residents also treat pediatric patients on anesthesia, orthopedics, and see patients 14 years of age and older on their trauma rotations.
Our didactic curriculum includes lectures from our pediatric EM faculty, quaterly joint conferences with the pediatrics department, board review sessions on pediatric topics, as well as pediatric simulation cases.
